Beyond the Intro Diet

This chart is a guide to introducing foods after the Intro Diet.
As with all things, individual tolerance to foods will vary.
This guide is to reinforce the need for gradual introduction of new foods into the diet.
  1. Never feed a child a food which has previously caused an anaphylactic reaction.

  2. Introduce ONE new food at a time- a two to four day interval is a great (but not mandatory) guideline for introducing new foods. This will make it possible determine whether each new food can be tolerated.

  3. This chart is based on the healing process that is taking place.
It is not based on a timeline. Some people may be able to add new foods more quickly than others.

  4. This list of foods is not all inclusive.
Please check pecanbread.com for a list of legal/illegal foods.

  5. Oil/butter may be used to prevent sticking when preparing pancakes. After the intro diet oil/butter can also be used when cooking meat or vegetables. Early in the diet, try to use fats sparingly to aid in healing. Foods should not be fried early in the diet as the extra fat is more difficult to digest.
Oil/butter may be used in any recipe that calls for it. The suggestion to avoid frying foods early in the diet was made due the difficulty
that kids on our list were having with deep fried foods.

  6. In Breaking the Vicious Cycle, Elaine allowed bacon cured with sugar to be eaten once a week when fried very crisp. However, for children on the autism spectrum we strongly advise that bacon not be used unless it is (1.) sugar and nitrate free and (2) if honey-cured, that the honey is pure honey.

Substitutes for bacon are crisply-fried legal prosciutto or crisply fried additive-free side pork. Side pork, which looks like a dull-colored bacon, can be found at many meat counters.

* Note: For those with strictures (narrowed ileums) certain foods may aggravate the narrowed portions of the ileum. These foods include raw grapes, lots of raisins, spaghetti squash, celery, vegetable and fruit peels, whole nuts (nut flour or nut butter seems to be okay). Please also see Obstructions and Resections.

7. In BTVC, Elaine cautioned against using homemade nut milks before 3 months into the diet so that people would not use too much of the same nuts. If nut milk and nuts butter and/or flours are not used in excess and are balanced with other foods, then the nut milks can be cautiously added after the intro diet. The nut milk should have all pulp/fiber removed; it should be diluted and the total amount of one type of nut should be balanced with other foods/food groups.

8. Homemade juiced fruits and/or vegetables can be added in stage 1. The homemade juices should have all pulp removed and be diluted by at least 50% when first introduced.

Again, this chart was created in an effort to help parents remember to introduce foods slowly and feed only well-tolerated foods.
